In brief: Panama

* Panama’s trade & industry ministry (MICI) has announced that the fifth round of talks regarding a free trade agreement (FTA) with China will take place from 24-26 April in Beijing. The Panamanian delegation will be led by MICI minister Néstor Gonzalez. The two countries forged diplomatic ties in June 2017, following the country’s rupture of diplomatic relations with Taiwan. The MICI’s announcement comes less than a month after President Juan Carlos Varela paid a visit to China where he held a series of meetings with leading Chinese infrastructure, transport, and technology companies, aiming to promote investment and tourism in Panama.
