MEXICO: Minatitlán incident exposes López Obrador

The killing of 13 people during an armed attack perpetrated by a presumed organised criminal group in the town of Minatitlán, in Mexico’s Veracruz state, is the latest episode to highlight the high levels of violence in the country. It comes amid the ongoing controversy over President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s insistence that levels of violence have been falling since his government assumed power in December 2018 and began implementing a new national security strategy [WR-19-15]. This is a major issue for López Obrador, who promised to reduce the violence related to organised crime, as the public could start losing confidence in him.
