Andrés Manuel López Obrador has submitted his 2019-2024 national development plan (PND) to the federal congress. Detailed in the plan is economic growth of 4% for the duration of the six-year presidential term. The PND was submitted at the same time as Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) released figures showing the country’s GDP contracted by 0.2% in the first quarter of 2019 compared with the final quarter of 2018, causing critics to draw comparisons with the government of former president
Ernesto Zedillo (1994-2000), under whose administration the economy shrank by 7%. López Obrador rejected this comparison, declaring in his morning press conference that the country
“is doing very well”. In a video shared over twitter, López Obrador discusses the PND and its focus of creating an economy that is not reliant upon international economic powers, putting an end to neoliberal economic policies and eradicating corruption.
