Miguel Prieto was declared the virtual winner of the 5 May mayoral by-election held in Ciudad del Este (CDE), Paraguay’s second city. Prieto an independent candidate running for the Movimiento Conciencia Democrática del Este local political movement is poised to become the first mayor of the city not to be belong to the traditionally and nationally ruling Asociación Nacional Republicana-Partido Colorado (ANR-PC). The electoral result has been hailed as a major victory in the fight against government corruption and sparked hope that it would send a clear message to the ANR-PC and the country’s other traditional political parties that they should clean up their act or lose their electoral support.
