Petrobras strike escalates. On 11 May one of the three MontevideoGas workers on hunger strike since 26 April ended the protest action on medical recommendation, the gas workers’ union UAOEGAS announced. Strikes and protests began on 23 April in response to an announcement that several workers of the gas company, owned by Brazil’s state-owned energy company, Petrobras, would be made redundant. The national press reported that the 37 planned redundancies were revealed as the company announced divestment plans from the Uruguayan market. According to the gas workers’ union that is 25% of the company’s total workforce.
