In brief: Ecuador

* Over 250 civil-society organisations, unions, and groups from around the world have sent a letter to Ecuador’s President Lenín Moreno urging him to take political action against US oil firm Chevron over its environmental pollution. The group pressed Moreno to execute a fine of US$9.5bn imposed in 2011 by a local court in Lago Agrio (Sucumbíos province) on Texaco, a Chevron subsidiary, for environmental damage to the Ecuadorean Amazon from 1964 to 1990. Last year, Chevron appealed to the Permanent Court for Arbitration (PCA) in The Hague through its state-investor dispute settlement clause (ISDS). In August 2018, the PCA ruled in favour of Chevron. The signatories to the letter, who call themselves Civil Society International, plan to deliver the letter to Ecuadorean embassies worldwide and declared 21 May “World Anti-Chevron Day”.
