* Paraguay’s national statistics directorate (DGEEC) has released its quarterly employment bulletin, in which it reports that the national unemployment rate stood at 6.9% in the first quarter of 2019, up from 5.6% in the last three months of 2018 but down from an unemployment rate of 7.4% in the first quarter of 2018. The underemployment rate has risen, with 7.2% of the working population classified as underemployed in the first quarter of the year, up from 5.9% in the previous quarter, and 5.2% over the same period last year. The unemployment rate is higher amongst the urban population than the rural population (7.6% versus 5.7%), but underemployment affects rural workers more (with a 9.6% underemployment rate versus 5.8% amongst urban workers).
