A report released by Peru’s national statistics institute (INEI) in April 2019 triumphantly announced that poverty levels in the country fell over 2018 by 1.2 percentage points. This equates to 313,000 people escaping poverty over the course of one year. It also means that 20.5% of the population remains in poverty, or that 6.59m people do not have the income to purchase a selection of basic goods considered necessary for survival. In 2018, a person with an income of less than PEN344 (US$104) per month was considered to be living in poverty, with extreme poverty defined as those with an income of less than PEN183 (US$55). Extreme poverty levels also fell over 2018, from 3.8% of the population in 2017 to just 2.8% of the population; this means that 309,000 people are no longer living in extreme poverty.End of preview - This article contains approximately 1147 words.
