New trainline. On 10 May President Lenín Moreno and his minister of transport and public works (MTOP), Aurelio Hidalgo, launched a public tender process for the contract to build phase one of the coastal railway, a new trainline that will extend from the inland city of Daule, Guayas province, to the coastal town of Manta, Manabí province. Plans for the railway were announced in October 2018, and the opening of the public tender to both national and international markets marks the first step towards the project’s completion. The coastal railway will need an investment of US$370.5m during its construction and US$156.4m for operation and maintenance across a 27-year period. The government intends to take offers until 16 August, award the contract on 9 October, and sign it a month later.
