In brief: Argentina

* Argentina’s supreme court has unanimously maintained the constitutional validity of the 'glaciers law', which sets limits for certain activities in specific environmental areas close to glaciers, rejecting a proposal from Barrick Exploraciones Argentinas SA and Exploraciones Mineras Argentinas SA, the subsidiaries of Canadian firms Barrick Gold and Yamana Gold respectively, which attempted to circumvent the glaciers law to carry out mining operations in the country's glacial regions. The glaciers law seeks to preserve the glaciers and permafrost areas as “strategic reserves of water resources for human consumption, agriculture…and as a source of scientific information and to attract tourists”.
