Brazil ignores US call to ban Huawei

Brazil: On 7 June, despite pressure from the US, Brazil’s Vice President Hamilton Mourão told journalists that Chinese telecommunications company Huawei would not be excluded from operating Brazil’s fifth generation cellular network (‘5G’ network). Mourão’s comments are part of a wider trend which is seeing Latin American leaders reject US demands to ban Huawei technology. Indeed, on 29 April, Chile’s President Sebastián Piñera met with Huawei’s chairman, Liang Hua, and invited the Chinese company to “participate in public tenders” in Chile, according to a company press release. Mexico’s presidential chief of staff, Alfonso Romo, recounted the words of US Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross during a meeting in May: “We do not want very active participation of Chinese investors in Mexico”. However, Huawei is already deeply rooted in Mexico’s telecommunications sector, with national wholesale telecommunications network 'Red Compartida' using the Chinese company as one of its technology providers.
