* Brazil’s government has announced the launch of its ‘Plano Safra 2019/2020’, an agricultural subsidies package which will allocate resources to small, medium, and large producers. A total R$225.59bn (US$58.43bn) will be channelled into supporting agricultural production in Brazil, of which R$222.74bn will be allocated to rural credit programmes, R$1bn for rural insurance, and R$1.85bn for supporting sale and distribution. Agriculture Minister
Tereza Cristina da Costa Dias highlighted that this is the first time that such a programme includes small-, medium- and large-scale agricultural producers together. The president of the organisation of Brazilian cooperatives (OCB),
Márcio Freitas, thanked the government for implementing the subsidies programme during a time of austerity and noted that Brazil’s agricultural sector would struggle to meet demand without these resources.
“[The Plano Safra] responds to the priorities of rural producers. Our sector will continue to produce more for Brazilians and the entire world,” he said.
