Andrés Manuel López Obrador has announced plans to modify the route of the Tren Maya railway project, a change which permits savings of M$5.5bn.
Alejandro Varela Arellano, the director of the national fund for tourism development (Fonatur), said that the new route will not use the Kantunil-Cancún highway, the concession for which belongs to construction company ICA. The Tren Maya is intended to offer cargo and tourist passenger traffic and connect the states of Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo.
