Peru’s Vizcarra ratchets up pressure on congress

The uneasy truce between Peru’s President Martín Vizcarra and congress is coming under strain once again. On 17 June Vizcarra publicly expressed his readiness to dissolve congress if it failed to approve six political reform proposals his government converted into a matter of confidence at the turn of the month [WR-19-22]. The main right-wing opposition Fuerza Popular (FP, Fujimoristas) granted the confidence vote in order to avoid the dissolution of congress and fresh elections under constitutional regulations. But in what is becoming time-honoured fashion, FP is dragging its heels.
