After some uncertainty over its agenda, the second chamber of Brazil’s supreme court (STF) decided on 25 June to go ahead and hold a vote on two habeas corpus requests presented by the defence team of former president Lula da Silva (2003-2011), who has been serving a prison sentence for corruption since April 2018. The first habeas corpus request, appealing an earlier decision by the superior court of justice (STJ), was denied by four votes to one. A decision on the second habeas corpus writ, asking for Lula’s release on the basis that then-judge Sergio Moro, who sentenced him, was biased, was postponed, at least until August.
