In brief: Colombia

* Colombia’s foreign ministry has confirmed that the Japanese government has donated US$4.5m to the Colombian government to assist with the pressures due to migration by Venezuelans. These resources will be used to assist Colombia's efforts to address the humanitarian needs of Venezuelan refugees and immigrants, as well as assisting returned Colombians, and other immigrants. According to June figures from the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), over 1.3m Venezuelans have migrated to Colombia as a result of the political and social crisis. The UNHCR notes that from some 695,000 at the end of 2015, the total number of refugees and migrants from Venezuela to Colombia other countries had skyrocketed to over 4m by mid-2019 with the number of refugees and migrants increasing by 1m in just seven months since November 2018.
