* A local NGO working on sustainable forestry, Consejo Civil Mexicano para la Silvicultura Sostenible (CCMSS), has warned that over the past 30 years four economic sectors in the Yucatán Peninsula - real estate, tourism, agriculture industry, and energy - have led to an overurbanisation and overdevelopment of the area that has put certain ecosystems at risk and threatens the way of life of multiple indigenous groups. CCMSS warns that tourist megaprojects like the Maya Riviera tourist belt, a series of resorts and shoreside tourist destinations, oversaturates the land and urbanizes what used to be quite a rural area. Similarly, oil fields and industrial electric power plants take up massive amounts of land on the peninsula, encroaching on indigenous homes and threatening the local environment. The CCMSS highlights that the latest example of this is President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s flagship transport infrastructure project ‘Tren Maya’, a train that will run around the peninsula, making transport for tourists much easier.
