Police corruption case opens can of worms in Uruguay

A corruption ring uncovered at the national police force has raised serious concerns about the emergence of police corruption in Uruguay. Unlike in many Latin American countries, this has not been a particular problem in the South American country, and the authorities have moved quickly to address the issue. Nevertheless, the case has fanned concerns that police officers in Uruguay are starting to turn towards crime. This in turn has drawn attention to the poor working conditions that many police officers endure and how this may be driving them into criminality.
