In brief: Profepa sanctions Grupo México after acid spillage
* Mexico’s federal environmental protection agency (Profepa) has announced the temporary partial closure of the maritime terminal of Guaymas, owned by mining and transport firm Grupo México, in the north western Sonora state. After a sulfuric acid spillage in the Gulf of California, Profepa carried out two site inspections, after which it declared that the firm lacked proper environmental authorisation for its activities. This temporary closure is not just applied to Grupo México’s maritime terminal, but rather all its other operations and activities related to the storage and maritime transportation of sulfuric acid.
