* Argentina’s agriculture minister,
Luis Miguel Etchevehere, has presented a declaration signed by members of the Consejo Agropecuario del Sur (CAS) ministerial council (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay) to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) regarding delays from certain food-importing countries in authorising the presence of biotechnological products from South America. The declaration, which is supported by the US and Canada, affirmed that the delay “
could unnecessarily complicate international agricultural trade and affect food security, in addition to slowing down technological innovation in the agro-industry of exporting countries where these products have already been evaluated as safe”. The declaration presented to the international community requests that other countries review their policies and consider adhering to the principles in the CAS, encouraging member countries to work together so that the issue can be resolved at a multilateral level.
