ARGENTINA: Economy the focus as elections approach

With just two weeks left before the open, mandatory, and simultaneous primaries (Paso) ahead of the October general election, electoral campaigning has intensified in Argentina. The presidential slate of the main opposition Frente de Todos alliance has attacked the economic record of the incumbent government led by President Mauricio Macri and focused the public’s attention on the precarious domestic economic situation in a bid to attract more support in the 11 August Paso that would allow it to build electoral momentum. But this strategy appears to have backfired following some exaggerated criticisms and the mooting of economic policy proposals aimed at alleviating public woes that have raised alarm among economists.
