CHILE | Diesel spill in Patagonia. Compañía Siderúrgica Huachipato (CAP Steel) announced on 27 July that it had spilled 40 cubic metres of diesel off the coast of the Island of Guarello in Chile’s southernmost region of Magallanes while transferring it onto a transport vessel. CAP Steel, a subsidiary of Chilean holding company Compañía de Acero del Pacífico (CAP Group), insisted that it was taking every possible measure to ensure that the spill was contained and confirmed that it consisted entirely of diesel and not crude oil, implying a less intensive clean-up process.
