BRAZIL: Bolsonaro stands fast on hard-line security policy

In an interview broadcast on 5 August, Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro once again defended the view encapsulated in the familiar Brazilian saying, “a good criminal is a dead criminal,” by advocating for legislation that would allow security forces to kill suspected criminals without the risk of facing judicial proceedings. In contrast, a public security report published that same day, which lists Brazil’s most violent cities, highlights the need for public security policies focused on improving levels of human development.
