Responsible mining in Peru: where next?

In April 2018, shortly after assuming office, Peru’s President Martín Vizcarra declared that he was ‘pro-development’ in relation to the mining sector, but only when new projects offered the opportunity to improve the quality of life of local residents and protected the environment. It was at this point that the term ‘responsible mining’ re-emerged: the president described his experience as ambassador to Canada during his time as vice-president (an ambassadorial post he held from October 2017 until he became president in March 2018), and how he requested that posting in order to observe how that country managed its mining industry in an environmentally responsible manner.
