VENEZUELA: Maduro uses sanctions to justify crackdown

Venezuela’s de facto government led by Nicolás Maduro has wasted no time in launching the promised “counteroffensive” in the wake of sweeping sanctions imposed by the US government last week. The supreme court (TSJ), a discredited appendage of the Maduro administration, instructed the illegitimate but powerful government-controlled constituent assembly (ANC) to strip four deputies in the legitimate but impotent opposition-controlled national assembly (AN) of their immunity from prosecution. The ANC duly complied with the TSJ request. Government strongman Diosdado Cabello, the ANC president, also announced that he would chair a commission to discuss bringing forward legislative elections to refill the AN from December 2020.
