In recent times, Latin America has made considerable progress when it comes to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Intersex (LGBTI) rights. However, these advances have not been linear across the region with some countries having done more than others to protect the rights of their LGBTI citizens. An analysis of LGBTI rights in the Andean region, for example, reveals that while a few countries, such as Colombia, Ecuador, and Bolivia have approved or recognised same-sex marriage, others, such as Venezuela, not only explicitly limit marriage between a (biological) male and female, but go as far as to ban open LGBTI people from serving in the military.
