CHILE: Competing labour reforms set to dominate congressional debate
A bill tabled by Chile’s opposition that seeks to reform the country’s labour code to reduce the working week looks set to advance in congress. This even though a separate bill tabled by the ruling right-wing Chile Vamos coalition, which has similar aims, is also currently before the legislature. Both initiatives are slated as improving the work-life balance and providing workers with more leisure and family time. But the opposition argues that unlike the Chile Vamos proposal theirs is in the interest of workers not business. Meanwhile Chile Vamos says that the opposition proposal will produce more harm than good. The debate over the proposals looks set to produce significant political divisions that could undermine the reform plans.
