Hernández in Washington to talk migration

Colombia: On 26 August, the Colombian government confirmed that the US Department of Commerce’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) had authorised the lifting of a ban (which stood for almost 29 years) on the import of Colombian yellowfin tuna. The US authorities determined that Colombia has met international standards on sustainability and species conservation. Colombia’s accession to and compliance with the Agreement on the International Dolphin Conservation Program (AIDCP), a legally binding multilateral agreement (in force since 1999), contributed to the US government’s decision. The Colombian government is eager to capitalise on the US’s high demand for the fish, which is currently being supplied by south east Asian nations and Latin American nations such as Mexico, Ecuador, and Brazil. Colombia’s ministry of commerce, industry & tourism stated that the lifting of the embargo “represented a great opportunity for the [fishing] sector”. In 2018, the US imported US$201.5m of yellowfin tuna globally, its imports of the fish increased by 13% between 2002 and 2018. In virtue of a free trade deal, in place since 2012, Colombian yellowfin tuna exports to the US will not be subject to tariffs.
