In brief: Ecuadorean court revokes licence for hydroelectric project

* Ecuador’s umbrella indigenous organisation Confederación de Nacionalidades Indígenas (Conaie) has announced that a court in Pastaza province has revoked the licence for the construction of a hydroelectric project on the Piatúa river. The authorisation which had been awarded to Genefran SA, a local energy company, was revoked, in addition to the environmental licence granted by Ecuador’s environmental ministry. Prior to the ruling, Ecuador’s attorney general’s office tweeted that a judge Aurelio Quito had been detained for accepting bribes. He had initially ruled in favour of the proposed project.
