In brief: Nicaragua’s remittances up 11.2% year-on-year

* Nicaragua’s central bank (BCN) has published a report detailing remittance flows for the 2nd quarter of 2019. Received remittances total US$412.8m, up 7.6 % on the previous quarter and up 11.2 % on the second quarter of 2018. The main sources of origin for these remittances are the US, which accounted for 56.0%, followed by Costa Rica (17.5 %), Spain (13.0%), and Panama (5.2 %). As regards the distribution of remittances across Nicaragua’s departments, the BCN’s report reveals that 68.9 % of all received remittances within the period are focused within Managua (34.9%) and the departments of Chinandega (11.0%), Estelí (8.7%), León (7.8%), and Matagalpa (6.5%).
