BAHAMAS-HAITI: Counting the cost of Hurricane Dorian
Authorities in The Bahamas are facing fierce criticism for their response to Hurricane Dorian one week after its devastating passage across parts of the island chain. The official death toll so far is 50, a figure likely to rise significantly as the government confirmed on 11 September that some 2,500 people have been reported missing. Around 76,000 have been left homeless and some 5,500 people have been evacuated. The number of deaths is expected to increase most among members of the poor Haitian immigrant community, whose shantytown on Great Abaco was struck by the eye of the hurricane.
