th edition of Peru’s largest mining convention, Perumin, has begun in Arequipa city, (the capital of the eponymous region). The five-day convention will address mining activity in Peru and the future challenges faced by the sector. The convention has coincided with region-wide strike undertaken by agricultural workers from the Valle de Tambo area of Islay province (Arequipa region) in opposition on environmental grounds to the Southern Perú Copper Corporation’s (SPCC) controversial 'Tía María' mining project. As a result of their protests in Arequipa, security has been stepped up within the historic town centre with the national police (PNP) strategically placed to prevent protestors from entering and disrupting the convention.
