COLOMBIA: Farc leaders appear before JEP over kidnapping

It was a powerful image. Eleven senior former members of the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc), including its maximum leader Rodrigo Londoño (‘Timochenko’), appeared before the transitional justice system (JEP) on 23 September to accept “collective ethical and political responsibility” for carrying out kidnappings during the country’s armed conflict. It looked like a calculated, symbolic, response to events one month earlier when Luciano Marín Arango (‘Iván Márquez’), the Farc’s former chief peace negotiator, and other former Farc leaders, issued a fresh call to arms [WR-19-35].
