Security & Strategic Review - October 2019

Brazil’s new crime statistics highlight public security challenges

The Fórum Brasileiro de Segurança Pública (FBSP), a public security think-tank, has published the 13th edition of its annual public security report, one of the leading sources of information on countrywide crime statistics in Brazil. Its findings are mixed. Positively, 2018 saw an overall fall in homicides. However, police violence is on the rise, primarily claiming young black men as victims. The report also paints a chilling picture of gender violence, particularly sexual violence against young girls. This challenges authorities to identify successful public security policies and replicate them to maintain the trend of decreasing homicides, while re-thinking strategies in those areas in which the state is failing to protect vulnerable citizens.
