Focus on building Caribbean hurricane resilience

Hurricane Dorian, which struck The Bahamas on 1 September and battered Abaco Island and Grand Bahama for almost two days, was one of the most powerful ever experienced in the Caribbean. It compared in intensity with the Labour Day Hurricane of 1935. The damage has been immense, with over 75% of the houses in the central and eastern parts of Grand Bahama destroyed – and many lives lost. A month after the disaster the confirmed death toll was 53, but with over 600 still missing.
