DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Medina’s dauphin prevails in party primaries

President Danilo Medina gained a measure of revenge over his arch rival within the ruling Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD), former president Leonel Fernández (1996-2000; 2004-2012), this week. Fernández led protests against a proposed constitutional reform to allow Medina’s re-election in 2020. Amid infighting within the PLD, Medina begrudgingly backed down.
