HAITI: Minustah displaces gangs from Cité Soleil

The UN operation launched in December to gain control of the Port-au-Prince slum district of Cité Soleil appears to have succeeded in one of its aims: to seize the headquarters of the three main gangs operating there. One of the top gang leaders, Evens Jeune, was captured when he tried to relocate to Les Cayes; another, 'Belony', reportedly succeeded in taking a large contingent of gunmen and setting up a new base in the Artibonite valley. Minustah spokesmen have said that the UN force would now establish a 'permanent' presence in Cité Soleil.
