COLOMBIA: Uribe dragged into court, stoking political tensions

Álvaro Uribe Vélez has become the first former president of Colombia (2002-2010) to appear on trial before the supreme court (CSJ). The most prominent living political figure in Colombia, seen as a patriotic hero by some and as a belligerent and highly divisive figure by others, Uribe faces trial over allegations of perverting the course of justice. As Uribe remains a sitting senator and leader of the ruling right-wing Centro Democrático (CD), the trial has the potential to produce tensions not just among the political class but also the general population, and its outcome could have major consequences.
