EL SALVADOR-NICARAGUA | Flap over gun-running claim. The Nicaraguan national police reacted tetchily on 7 March to a claim by Salvadorean president Elías Antonio Saca that arms were being smuggled into his country from Nicaragua. Police spokesman Alonso Sevilla said that no official representation had been received from the Salvadorean government on the matter, and that the only information they had on it was what had appeared in the media. This has been widely interpreted as a dig at President Saca, who on 6 March said at a press conference in response to a question about gun-running, 'We have had information about the entry of these arms and have given instructions to the police and the army to pay full attention to finding out where they are coming from. It is assumed that they are coming from Nicaragua.'
