* Brazil’s President
Jair Bolsonaro has indicated that Argentina’s suspension from the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) trade bloc could be considered if Peronist presidential candidate
Alberto Fernández wins the 27 October presidential election (as he is expected to) and does not pursue a policy of trade opening.
“The return of...Cristina Kirchner to the Argentine government could put the whole of Mercosur at risk”, Bolsonaro told journalists in Japan in reference to the former president who is Alberto Fernández’s running mate. If this were to happen, an alternative solution could be found with Uruguay and Paraguay (the other two Mercosur member countries), he said. This is a shift from the Brazilian government’s previous discourse, in which
it threatened to leave Mercosur should the Peronists return to power in Argentina.
