* The Santiago chamber of commerce (CCS) estimates that the economic losses suffered by Chile’s retail sector as a result of the ongoing protests against inequality have amounted to over US$1.4bn. The damages caused by looting and destruction of property are estimated to be around US$900m while a loss of about US$500m is due to the lack of sales during the protests. In that sense about 400,000 of the estimated 1.3m workers that make up the retail sector have been, in some way, affected by the protests.
