DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Ruling party splits

On 28 October, 27 national deputies representing the ruling Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD) resigned from the party, alleging electoral fraud in the primary elections earlier this month in which former president Leonel Fernández (1996-2000; 2004-2012) was narrowly defeated by former public works minister Gonzalo Castillo, who had the backing of President Danilo Medina.
