NICARAGUA: Battle commences over ‘rights’

Nicaragua’s First Lady and Vice-President Rosario Murillo launched a new campaign, ‘Todos tenemos derechos’ (‘We all have rights’) on 30 October. Murillo said that the campaign had been designed by the government led by her husband Daniel Ortega to underscore the importance of individual rights, foremost among which, she said, was “dignity”. The launch of this campaign comes as opposition groups have staged fresh protests against the Ortega administration over violation of human rights, and shortly after the European Union (EU) adopted a framework for targeted restrictive measures in Nicaragua in response to the crackdown on government opponents which began in April 2018.
