Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador accused opponents of his government this week of using ‘bots’ to try to discredit the local press on social media platforms as part of efforts to undermine his administration. Coming at a time when Mexico’s economy continues to show signs of slowing to a halt, and when violence and insecurity remain high, the completely unexpected accusations have befuddled public opinion and raised questions as to whether López Obrador may have been trying to distract public and press attention away from the main sources of public concern by shifting the focus to another issue.
