* Mexico’s finance minister, Arturo Herrera Gutiérrez, and his Guatemalan counterpart, Víctor Manuel Alejandro Martínez Ruíz, have signed an agreement on “mutual administrative assistance and exchange of information relating to customs”. The agreement has the objective of facilitating trade exchange between both countries, modernising the customs systems and strengthening cooperation and assistance. Herrera described the signing of the agreement as the “first step in a very ambitious economic development agenda for the region”, adding that it signified not only the first step in Central American integration but also strengthened trade between the Mexican border state of Chiapas and Guatemala. The head of Mexico’s tax authority (SAT), Margarita Ríos-Farjat, commented that the agreement seeks to impose “order, intelligence and strategy on the exchange of information and strengthen the rule of law”.
