Guyana

Lagging on human-development indicators

Notwithstanding its relatively healthy position on debt, Guyana’s general lack of economic progress relative to the rest of the Caribbean is reflected, not surprisingly, in measures for human development, as monitored by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). In the world index, Guyana ranks just 125 out of 189 countries and territories, with an index score of 0.654. No other country in the English-speaking Caribbean has a score of below 0.7, and only Belize (106) ranks above 100 (with a score of 0.708).
