In brief: El Salvador-South Korea FTA to take effect in 2020

* A free trade agreement (FTA) between El Salvador and South Korea will take effect on 1 January 2020. Although El Salvador signed the FTA in February 2018, it took the South Korean congress more than a year to ratify it, completing ratification in August 2019. However, Francisco Escobar Thompson, honorary consul of South Korea in El Salvador, told local news outlet El Mundo that the FTA would come into effect at the beginning of the new year. Thompson told El Mundo that with the launch of the FTA, “El Salvador will increase its export and import amounts by 20%, which will benefit the Korean and Salvadorean market”.
