In brief: Brazil set for record grain harvest

* Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has announced that it expects the 2020 harvest to yield 240.91m tonnes in grain crops, a marginal increase of 33,600 tonnes on the 2019 harvest. The 2019 harvest was a record, expected to total 240.88m tonnes, a 6.4% increase on the 2018 harvest. In 2020, production of maize and beans is expected to decrease slightly, but this will be counterbalanced by an increase in the production of cotton (by 2.0%), rice (by 1.0%), and soybeans (6.7%). Brazil is on track to become the world’s largest soybean producer.
