Iván Duque has called for Ecuador to be included in the Pacific Alliance, as Colombia assumes the presidency of the trade bloc – also containing Mexico, Chile, and Peru – in 2020. This was the major announcement of a binational cabinet meeting between Duque and Ecuador’s President
Lenín Moreno, held in Cali, the capital of Colombia’s Valle del Cauca department. The two leaders also emphasised the need for more effective co-operation to support democracy and security in the region, discussing the widespread recent protests in both countries, and blaming the escalation of violence on “
forces foreign to peace, security, and freedom”.
