Bolivia’s former president Evo Morales (2006-2019) is now in Argentina where he has been granted refugee status. His arrival, two days after his ally Alberto Fernández was sworn in as Argentina’s new head of state, was followed by some mixed messages from the new Argentine government as to whether he would be able to make political statements. This is serving as one source of strain on relations with Bolivia’s interim government led by President Jeanine Áñez, which has ordered an arrest warrant for Morales on charges of terrorism and sedition: the Fernández administration has already rejected any possibility of extradition.
